Austerity post-2016 is set to be rebadged as 'prudence'

But keeping the electorate in ignorant bliss about the state of the public finances is hardly going to be helpful for whichever government next year then has to sort out the mess, writes Michael Burton.

There are few better examples of the disconnect between politicians and reality than the debate – or non-debate – over the public finances.

On Monday morning this week two national newspapers ran completely contradictory stories about spending plans. In The Times, previewing his speech to the CBI conference, David Cameron promised a ‘roads revolution' pledging huge investment in highway infrastructure.
