Authorities could face polls over 0% council tax freeze

Opposition leaders have warned changes to the council tax referendums could force authorities to conduct polls.

Changes to council tax referendums – lowering the threshold at which votes are triggered from 3.5% to 2% – could result in authorities being forced to conduct polls even if a freeze were applied, Opposition leaders have warned.

Chancellor George Osborne last month said the Government would fund a third successive year of council tax freeze, pledging £450m support to be allocated to English local authorities in 2013/14.
