The precarious nature of the public finances was laid bare today, as chancellor George Osborne revealed in his Autumn Statement that 2011 and 2012 growth figures have been drastically revised down.

As late as March this year, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) predicted the economy would grow 1.7% in 2011 and 2.5% in 2012 - lower than previous forecasts.
