As communities secretary, Eric Pickles has been accused of not caring, but Diary was heartened this week to hear his human side, while being interviewed on BBC Radio 4.

Mr Pickles was talking about his motivations for changing Britain's parking laws and giving drivers a 10-minute grace period, before they can be given a parking ticket, which he said was inspired by a ‘dreadful' experience he had in Essex.
