Barnett Formula - triumph of experience over hope

Overcoming his previous antipathy for all things Caledonian, in 1773 Samuel Johnson bravely ventured with his famed biographer, James Boswell, for a tour of the latter's native Scotland.

During their tour of the Hebrides, the great lexicographer was asked about his feelings for the epic scenery and ‘noble prospects' of North Britain.
