Battling the booze - Newquay case study

Newquay is well known as one of Britain's most popular sea-side destinations.  The combination of wonderful natural beaches and vibrant nightlife has made it a favourite with visitors of all ages over many years.

But like many seaside towns and city centre areas Newquay has had to face up to the excesses of the night-time economy.

In 2009 Newquay there were two tragic alcohol-related deaths and it seemed to some that residents were under siege from alcohol related anti-social behaviour.  The town was in danger of losing its appeal to one and all and getting an unwanted reputation.

Residents took to the streets demanding action.  Since then the Newquay Safe Partnership - linking the local Council, police, fire and health services as well as both the on-trade and off-trade businesses in the town - has provided excellent leadership in tackling the worst of the problems and we have seen real results.

In just four years, Newquay has seen a 7% fall in incidents of violence and 22% decrease of nuisance behaviour.
