Bedford wants to break free

Bedford BC has become the latest authority to announce it wants to go it alone and become a unitary. Deputy mayor, ~Shan Hunt~ said officers were drawing up plans to see how much it would cost to break free from Bedfordshire CC, after the idea of becoming a unitary was given cross-party support at a cabinet meeting last week.

‘The logical thing would be for Bedford itself to go it alone, and mid and south Bedfordshire to call themselves a county council,' she said. ‘For a start, it's deeply frustrating not being able to get things done. We believe we can deliver services in a much better way on our own.' Cllr Hunt said Bedford's chief executive, ~Shaun Field~ had already proved he could deliver savings and good services, both at Bedford and while he was interim chief executive at Erewash BC.
