Betting on a bold Budget

Unison’s report showing councils’ record £4.3bn funding gap highlights the need for chancellor Rachel Reeves to be bold with her Budget, says Mike Short

In Parliament last week, Unison painted a grim picture of the financial challenges facing local government.

The union was hosting an event for MPs to promote the findings of its Councils on the Brink report, which revealed local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales face a record-high funding gap of £4.3bn in 2025-26. By the following year the cumulative shortfall is estimated to reach £8.5bn.
