Amber Rudd walked away from her post as secretary of state for work and pensions this month, with Therese Coffey taking her place - the fifth incumbent since July 2016.

Rudd's departure refocuses attention on the Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) heavily criticised Universal Credit (UC) policy. The 2011 introduction of UC was trumpeted by Iain Duncan Smith as a transformation of the welfare system. But by February this year Rudd was admitting that the rollout had contributed to an increase in foodbank use.
