The Government's flagship Big Society initiative has become a 'toxic brand', according to its former champion, the TV producer, Phil Redmond.

Speaking at last week's annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountacy, Mr Redmond, who created the Channel Four soap opera Brookside, said the Big Society plan had become a 'victim of negative media impact', but added that the concept remained valid.
