Birmingham to get children's services commissioner

A review has recommended an independent commissioner be appointed to oversee Birmingham City Council’s children’s services department.

A review has recommended an independent commissioner be appointed to oversee Birmingham City Council's children's services department.

Children's minister, Edward Timpson, has confirmed in a letter he wants to see Lord Norman Warner appointed to the rule following a review by Professor Julian le Grand.

The review also ruled out the transfer of responsibility for children's services to a local authority, as well as a ‘wait and see' option.

If the report recommendations are agreed, education secretary, Michael Gove, will appoint the commissioner.

Birmingham City Council's director of people, Peter Hay, welcomed the report.

‘We all understand that the severity of the issues and the lengthy period without improvement needs greater oversight,' said Mr Hay.

‘The report has given us a much better understanding of what has stopped improvement happening and what needs to be in place for the future.'
