Birmingham fights mayor plan

The Government has urged Birmingham City Council to consider an elected mayor in order to receive extra funding and control over city issues.

However, councillors have already rejected the idea. Council leader Mike Whitby said: ‘Whitehall needs to stop tinkering around with headline-grabbing governance arrangements and look more closely at giving us the freedom to deliver what local people want.'
