The DCLG must come up with emergency intervention plans in case budget cuts and demand force a spate of town hall bankruptcies, government spending watchdogs warned this week.

The call comes from a National Audit Office (NAO) report into the financial sustainability of local authorities, which highlights the difficulties town halls face in maintaining services over the rest of the Spending Review period while absorbing 28% cash cuts.
