As a Roman city, York's transport facilities are not fit for the modern age, so the council has outlined a modern transport vision to meet the needs of the city and help tackle climate change, says Nick Appleyard.

The historic city of York has witnessed much turbulence since it was founded by the Romans in 71 AD. It was invaded by the Vikings, marched on by William the Conqueror, and besieged by Parliamentarians during the English Civil War.
