Britain will continue to divide unless we devolve to more cities

The sense of dislocation across the country is only going to be exacerbated in the coming years. Andrew Carter argues the answer is to move away from one-size-fits-all policy-making and to increase decentralisation.

If there's one lesson we can take from the political upheavals of recent years, it's that Britain is increasingly divided – and nowhere is it more evident than in our cities.

This is the central theme of Cities Outlook 2018, the Centre for Cities' annual health-check on UK urban economies. It examines the growing disparities between different cities in terms of political leanings, living standards, and economic performance – and the implications these have for their economic prospects.
