BSI launches community standards

Standards institute gives guidance to improve social cohesion and inclusivity and strengthen local economies.

New guidance designed to improve the quality of life for local communities has been launched by the British Standards Institute (BSI)

Based on existing standards, BS 8904 – guidance for community sustainable development - aims to enhance social cohesion and inclusivity, lessen environmental impacts and strengthen local economies.

Representatives from local councils, the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs helped develop the product along with planners, community-building bodies, the NHS and academic experts.

According to Professor David Jackman, chairman for the sustainable communities committee, the recognition that communities can drive progress represents a ‘radical departure' for BSI.

‘It is about building community spirit and involvement, not top-down planning, although local government may find the overall approach very useful,' Professor Jackman explained.
