Buckinghamshire's break for success

Martin Tett looks at how Buckinghamshire Council’s unitary status removed some barriers to successfully responding to the COVID crisis and how it is now tackling residents’ mental health and wellbeing as it moves towards a greener future.

No-one in local government could have imagined what the last 14 months were going to bring. We are all still reeling, still battling, still fighting COVID at the same time as providing the best possible services to our residents.

We all have a different tale to tell. The unique slant for us here in Buckinghamshire is that we have been tackling the pandemic as a brand-new authority set up at exactly the same time COVID first hit. Our timeline mirrors the pandemic. At times I have to pinch myself when I look back at what we have managed and what we have achieved over the last year and a bit.
