Budget 2023: The sector does not have the gift of time

Government was quiet on the challenges facing the public sector including pay, on a Budget day when many of its staff walked out, and at a time when public services remain fragile, says Simon Christian. 

For me, Budget announcements fall into the same category as New Year's Eve – highly anticipated but usually disappointing. 

While the extension of free childcare should make a significant difference long term in supporting parents with returning to work, it's not difficult to see the irony of a government announcing further childcare support when 40% of school-age children were at home because of teacher strikes.
