Building Community Power in Bristol

Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees outlines why the city has joined the Keep it Local network – a new coalition of councils who are seeking to harness the power of community.

I came into politics from a community development background. I worked for a development agency, as a journalist and then in the voluntary sector before going on to manage race equality in mental health issues for the NHS.

Throughout, I saw that community organisations can provide services in ways that the public sector cannot or will not. I saw it repeatedly - particularly around mental health, where so often people fall out the system.
