Business rates: Improve quality not quantity of commercial space

The Government should encourage local authorities to attract higher-value businesses if they are to benefit from the devolution of business rates, a new report has suggested.

The Government should encourage local authorities to attract higher-value businesses if they are to benefit from the devolution of business rates, a new report has suggested.

The report, Maximising the growth incentive across the country, published by the Centre for Cities today stressed that the devolution of business rates only encourages local authorities to increase floor space without improving the quality of businesses occupying that space.
