Cap battle over £5

The Government is set to cap two local authorities, despite their council tax increases being around £5 less than the average.

Tory-controlled Medway Council and Liberal Democrat-run York City Council face being capped because their council tax rises were judged ‘excessive'. Both authorities breached the 5% barrier, while their 2006/07 budgets were also up by more than 6% on this year.
