Public sector focused construction companies suffered the greatest fall in orders last year, raising fresh worries that the impact of government spending cuts may be greater than anticipated and cause a second industry slump.

Findings commissioned by the Financial Times reveal the value of new contracts awarded to the country's 50 top firms fell by nearly 40% from £34.5bn to £21bn in the year to May.
