The chancellor should tackle low care sector pay in the Budget

If the chancellor does not allocate more funding for care training and pay in the Budget the sector will continue to be understaffed and the new post-2021 immigration system will still need to supply it with low paid labour, says Michael Burton.

One of the criticisms of the EU's freedom of movement policy is that high levels of immigration into the UK meant employers abandoned investment in training and technology and opted instead for cheap labour from Europe, thereby also lowering productivity

Pro-Brexit ministers argue that now we are no longer in the EU, employers should factor decent training into their labour costs, and offer wages that reflect the UK's cost of living, not that of Romania.
