Chanelling local expertise into the school system

Ahead of the consultation on a new National Funding Formula for schools, John O'Brien says the sector must argue the value of local knowledge and expertise in the schools system.

Whatever the state of the perennial debate about the role of local authorities in education, there are some enduring truths.

Schools with the confidence of their local communities are one of the keystones of successful place-making. Accordingly, good schools will always be high on the agenda of councillors and officers alike. However much formal powers may change, good councils use their hard and soft power in order to lead and influence the system in their patch.
