We can change behaviours, hearts and minds on the climate emergency

There are great examples of the good work on climate friendliness by County Councils' Network member authorities, says Cllr Sam Corcoran - but there will be a limit to what can be done unless local government is properly funded.

Climate change is the greatest challenge facing our generation and for too long we have failed to rise to the challenge. However, there is now growing momentum behind efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Earlier this year, Parliament declared an environment and climate emergency; following in the footsteps of many councils. Many local authorities have followed suit.

Cheshire East, alongside over 200 councils across the country, has already started taking steps. Many of my colleagues across the country have pledged zero-carbon initiatives, incorporated climate change into their local development plans, and are tackling air quality issues with the powers they have, in addition to encouraging residents to live healthier and greener lives.
