Charging to support the night-time economy

Andrew North explains how the spa town of Cheltenham is making inroads into establishing a safer environment for its residents through a night-time levy on its bars and clubs.

Walking through the regency streets and idyllic parks of Cheltenham, it may seem strange to learn that this tranquil spa town is helping spearhead a campaign to crack down on the crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour associated with the night time economy.

But nonetheless, Cheltenham is introducing a night time levy on its bars and clubs that will be used to fund measures to reduce the harm that excess alcohol causes and so keep the town vibrant and safe at night.
