Council chiefs have attacked the coalition’s plans to set thresholds for council tax referendums as ‘interference’ which damages the ability of local authorities to set next year’s budgets.

Council chiefs have attacked the coalition's plans to set thresholds for council tax referendums as ‘interference' which damages the ability of local authorities to set next year's budgets.

The comments – which come ahead of next week's local government finance settlement – followed reports that ministers intend to extend the council tax freeze policy for a fifth successive year, and again set triggers for local tax votes.
