How to make a citizens' assembly work for you

Want to commission a citizens’ assembly? Here, three councils say ‘go for it’. But there’s a lot to think about – and above all, you need the right issue say Sarah Owens, Isobel Wade and James Moody.

For much of 2019, our three authorities – the Greater Cambridge Partnership, Dudley MBC and Test Valley BC – have been busy designing and running citizens' assemblies.

Thanks to the Innovation in Democracy Programme, funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government, we have benefited from financial support and expertise to be among the first authorities in England to carry out assemblies.
