Civil service devolution?

Whitehall could do worse than look to Scotland’s example in creating a successfully devolved civil service that delivers for communities, writes Katherine Kerswell.

Since the Scottish referendum and the prime minister's announcement the day after, devolution has been THE hot topic. So what might it mean for local government and the civil service?

There are at present few details. The Command Paper published by the Secretary of State for Scotland this month, is a collection of the proposals of the three main UK political parties on devolution. It is the starting point for the Smith Commission and William Hague's Cabinet Devolution Committee and gives some useful pointers.
