Climate Challenge - how is the public sector measuring up?

Jason Longhurst asks if the local government sector is genuinely leading on and investing in the climate challenge – ‘or resting on pledges and platitudes, with lists of words rather than actions’.

The public sector is facing one of its most complex periods of change, challenge and opportunity. Against the backdrop of a new Government, economic uncertainty and continued transformation of services, our communities loudly and clearly state we must address climate change.

Whether it is a climate emergency, crisis or challenge, net zero or real zero, single use or reduced plastics, are we clear on the outcomes and impact benefits we seek to achieve? The language is complicated, the actions and demands are many and the measure of success not clear or aligned. The public sector has huge potential to connect services and people, to shape a sustainable approach that is transitional for our sector and measurable in terms of positive outcomes.
