Coalition 'refresh' should 'focus on central-local relations'

MPs told sector should use Government's mid-term talks to secure new relationship between Whitehall and councils.

Local government leaders should use the anticipated 'refresh' of the Coalition agreement to codify the relationship between central and local government, a leading proponent has argued.

Addressing the communities and local government select Committee on 16 April, Graham Allen MP said recently devolved powers were 'hollow without financial freedoms' and that local decision-making would continue to be skewed without councils possessing full powers to focus resources at their own discretion.
