Coastal councils to be hit most by ageing population

Coastal local authorities will struggle most to deal with the impact of an ageing population with urban councils having the youngest age profile, according to a report from the Office for National Statistics.

Coastal local authorities will struggle most to deal with the impact of an ageing population with urban councils having the youngest age profile, according to a report from the Office for National Statistics.

In mid-2016 there were 1.6m people aged 85 years and over (2% of the total population) but by mid-2041 this is projected to double to 3.2m and by 2066 to treble, by which time there will be 5.1m people aged 85 years and over making up 7% of the total UK population.
