Rising levels of traffic, coupled with severe winters and reductions in funding, are putting councils highways teams under increasing pressure, according to a new report by the Audit Commission.

The commission highlighted how councils could get better value for money through collaborations with neighbouring authorities, asset management and new ways of keeping residents informed. The commission also called on authorities to weigh up the value of short-term repairs against long-term resilience.
