All things being equal It is not often that local government wants central government to intervene in an issue, but that is exactly what is happening with equal pay.

Councils already over-stretched by the pay and grading reviews – which are a nightmare in themselves – are also being hammered by equal pay tribunals. Pay reviews are adding about 5% to the pay bill, and compensation fees for women workers who have been underpaid are spiralling upwards.
