The complexity of the civil service

Civil service pensions are entering a period of almost Byzantine complexity, says Jonathan Werran.

‘Keep it simple, stupid' was the presiding ethos of fabled Lockheed jet-airplane pioneer, ‘Kelly' Johnson.

Relating to his stricture that engineers working for him design machines which could be easily fixed by average mechanics using standard tools in field conditions – and not a disparaging view on either intelligence or competence – ‘KISS', as the instruction became known, is now a standard industry acronym.
