Council chiefs cut through the social class barriers

So local government is less elite than most. Does it matter? Heather Jameson would argue it does.

There is a deep irony surrounding the latest Sutton Trust report, which found that local government was far less privileged than central Government when it comes to private school and Oxbridge educations. The report comes amid a backdrop of the Conservative Party leadership contest, which has seen allegations of elitism hurtling around.

In a contest dominated by Eton-educated Oxford graduates, it was perhaps inevitable that there would be criticism of a lack of diversity. But would the questions have been raised if we were faced with a line-up of potential PMs with a council house, state school background?
