Council tax – a levy too far?

After MJ/LGiU research found nine in 10 councils were set to raise their council tax this year, Christina Hirst explains the difficulties in keeping communities ‘on side’ during levy hikes

Like it or loathe it, council tax isn't one of the most popular taxes in the eyes of the public. A recent survey by NatWest revealed that across Great Britain, council tax was the household bill that was seen to offer the worst value for money, with just 15% of consumers believing it to offer ‘very good' or ‘good' value for money.

One particular recent challenge to the perception of council tax has come from the end of the council tax freeze.
