Councillors to be exempted from paying tax on expenses

Travel expenses to councilors will be exempted from income tax and National Insurance.

Travel expenses to councilors will be exempted from income tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) under proposed legislation announced by the Government this week.

The MJ understands that communities secretary Eric Pickles was ‘instrumental' in pushing for the change to the rules.
