In its submission to the All Party Parliamentary Committee's review of the role of councillors, London Councils said key to attracting high-calibre people to become councillors was proper support and reward. London Councils chairman, Cllr Merrick Cockell, said: ‘Being a councillor is a hugely responsible but fulfilling position.
‘However, to avoid it becoming the province of those who are retired or independently wealthy, people need support and help to deal with the workload and other pressures that come with it.'
