Councils condemn slow funeral assistance system

Town halls lament complex system for obtaining financial assistance for funerals at a time of rising need.

Town halls across England and Wales have complained about the complex system for obtaining financial assistance for funerals, at a time when an increasing number of struggling families are seeking help.

In a recent Local Government Association (LGA) survey of 159 councils, 52% reported an increase in residents claiming to be unable to contribute to funeral costs over the past three years and 51% reported an increase in those unwilling to contribute.
