Councils will be given a duty to ensure taxis and private hire vehicles are better equipped to protect children from sexual exploitation after a campaign.

The changes come after it emerged that private hire vehicles and taxis played a significant role in the grooming and trafficking of young girls for sex in Rotherham, where 1,400 children were abused by gangs of men between 1997 and 2013.
