Councils should be handed greater financial freedom to decide housing priorities across their areas, influential MPs have reported.

In a 7 May report, the Commons communities and local government committee warned the country faced a major housing shortage and called for new initiatives to encourage more building, together with the easing of financial controls on authorities.
