Local government leaders have defended the use of compromise agreements as a cost-effective way of managing staff exits, following an attack by ministers on town hall 'gagging orders'.

Local government leaders have defended the use of compromise agreements as a cost-effective way of managing staff exits, following an attack by ministers on town hall 'gagging orders with big pay-offs'.

The comments came after Freedom of Information (FoI) campaigners revealed 256 English town halls brokered some 4,562 compromise agreements between 2005 and 2010.
