Councils have secured multi-billion EU structural funds over the next seven years, allaying concerns the money would be controlled by Whitehall and not diverted to local communities.
Previously disbursed by the soon to be abolished Regional Development Agencies, EU plans for allocating the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and European Social Fund (ESF) between 2014 and 2020 will now be agreed between MEPs, local authorities and the Government. Currently the funds from 2007 to 2013 are worth over £8bn.
