What councils need are genuine powers at local level

The spring Budget pledged to put local government back at the heart of economic growth, but the Government needs to scrap the pointless competitive bidding for cash and give local authorities fiscal autonomy and certainty, says Heather Jameson.

The one abiding belief of people who work in local government is that you can make a difference. It is, though, often easier said than done.

Right now, local government is facing a permacrisis across finance, social care, housing, climate and the economy – a well-rehearsed set of wicked issues that, despite the hard work and innovation of many people, we are failing to resolve.
