Councils 'ignoring legal duty' to offer childcare

A study has revealed, two-thirds of English local authorities fail to ensure sufficient childcare is available during the summer.

Two-thirds of English local authorities are failing to meet their legal duty to ensure sufficient childcare is available this summer, forcing many parents to ‘juggle' responsibilities, a study has revealed.

According to the Daycare Trust's survey of holiday childcare costs in 2012, the average cost over the summer months has increased by 19% in Wales, and 18% in Yorkshire and Humberside – with costs between neighbouring regions varying by as much as £20 a week.
