Councils cannot improve public health alone

Michael Burton asks whether a local or national strategy should tackle the issue of improving public health, or whether it demands a combination of the two

The head of NHS England, Simon Stevens, has often said that obesity, and by inference, poor diet, is ‘the new smoking'.

The question though is whether reducing obesity and improving diet requires national legislation such as was introduced to ban smoking in public places or whether it can be achieved locally. This of course directly concerns local authorities who have had two years of responsibility for public health and ought to by now have some idea of progress.
