20% of councils get more income from charges than council tax, watchdog finds

Senior local government figures claim Audit Commission analysis of council income makes case for funding overhaul.

Council chiefs and finance experts have argued that a spending watchdog's analysis of council income gives further ammunition for calls to overhaul a ‘bust' local government funding system.

The comments follow publication today by the Audit Commission of research indicating more than one in five councils now derives more income from charges than council tax collection.
