Councils must lead the way in raising standards across social housing

The Social Housing White Paper should be welcomed as a chance to renew council housing’s purpose of providing people with the highest possible standard of living, say Jamie Carswell and Joanne Drew.

The Social Housing White Paper is an important moment for social landlords. Initiated following the disaster at Grenfell Tower, both government and the social housing sector must work together to ensure the paper represents a watershed moment that places trust, empathy and responsiveness at the heart of the relationship between tenants and landlords.

For local authorities the white paper demands a corporate-level response to ensure we successfully deliver the new duties.
