Councils should not be allowed to appoint their own external auditors, says the Audit Commission.

Councils should not be allowed to appoint their own external auditors, says the Audit Commission.

In evidence to the DCLG select committee, the commission says allowing public bodies to do so will ‘undermine auditors' ability to report independently. It also says too little consideration has been given to the local impact of abolishing the commission and argues that it has helped keep auditing costs down.
